'09 Touring Exhaust

Well, well, well. Have you seen the exhaust on the new 2009 Touring bikes? It looks like some Harley Engineer read my post dated 29 Feb 08 under the topic 07 Ultra Passenger Heat Problem in where I stated " Harley should stop building bikes with crossover pipes and design there exhaust systems like the Victory Vision in where the rear cylinder exhaust is routed down then out,aft of the swing arm."
Now, they routed the front exhaust under the swingarm instead of the rear exhaust and routed the rear exhaust forward like a two into one pipe.
It's nice to know that Mother Harley does look at this Forum site but I'm not going to hold my breath as to when I should receive my royalty checks in the mail.

RE: Anybody like the new Road King Custom?

Just had someone from work drop his Victory Vision on the front fender of my Ultra yesterday. Got a repair estimate today. New color matched fender and an hour and a half labor. $535.00. Six weeks lead time on getting the new fender.

RE: 1986 Radian Fuel Leak

Its most likely a sticky carburetor float. I believe your bike has the cylinder bank canted forward at about 45 degrees. The fuel will drain into the motor this way. If you had a bike in which the carburetor sets parallel you could spot it right away as the float bowl would be wet, thus pointing out which floats bad.

RE: oil and filters

I recommend Amsoil oil and filter and a K&N air filter. Any shop can get you a K&N air filter. Stage 1 & Big Sucker are all K&N filters.
Amsoil is the best oil out there. Its heat reducing properties are second to none.

RE: 07 Ultra Passenger Heat Problem

I just removed the lowers last Wednesday in preparation for the summer riding season. There is virtually no heat issue at all. The left floorboard measures about 10 degrees higher than ambient air temperature while at speeds above 30 mph. I haven't got caught in stop and go traffic yet but I suspect that temps could get about 20 to 30 degrees hotter than ambient air depending on how long I'm stuck in traffic.
I still haven't got the wife on the back yet but I'm sure she'll be pleased.
For now, with temps in Maryland hovering in the upper 70's , I'm very happy.

RE: 2007 Ultra and Heat Issues

With out a doubt. Get the oil cooler. My experience with the Power Commander did not lower the heat. On my '07 Ultra, I'm running a Power Commander, Stage 1 Air Cleaner and Vance & Hines True Dual header pipes attached to my stock mufflers along with a oil cooler. I'm pretty happy with that setup but my fuel mileage is only 32 mpg.

RE: fuel milage

I'm going to take a guess and guess that you had a dealership install the stage one and pipes. This means they installed the SERT and flashed it with there HD stage one program. Others who have had this done are also complaining of low gas mileage. My guess would be that some, but not all dealers are loading an incorrect program. The technician may think he has the correct program when indeed it has been rescinded. Some dealers may not be on the ball with there SERT programs.
With that being said your Heritage should be getting about 35 mpg. I've read where others have stated mpg's in the 40's. I myself cannot see how this is possible when my 1100cc Honda was getting 44 mpg. How can a nearly 1600cc v-twin get that kind of mileage?

RE: whick bike GL1800 or K1200LT

Buy the Gold Wing. Buy a travel trailer that pops up as a camper. Load the floor of the camper with all your belongings. Have a campsite atlas and then take the whole summer off.

RE: 07 Ultra Passenger Heat Problem

I just finished installing the Vance and Hines dresser dual header pipes to my stock mufflers a month ago. It took me four and a half hours to do in the comfort of my garage. It wasn’t necessarily hard, just a little time consuming. As Hawg Man said, it sounds throatier. The right crossover pipe is gone and so is the heat. The heat on the left pipe/passenger floorboard stayed the same. (About twenty degrees higher than ambient air temperature while cruising with the lowers installed) I’ll continue removing the lowers in the summer to maximize the air flowing along side the motor. Again, as Hawg Man said, I don’t feel any reduction in power. If there is any loss, the reduction in heat outweighs the loss of power. The fuel mileage went down a little from 32mpg to 31 mpg city.
Now, this is my first Harley I’ve ever owned our ridden. I’ve spent over twelve hundred dollars in parts and done all the installation work myself trying to cool this bike down. It’s now obvious to me that I’ll never own another Harley without having a True Dual exhaust system. Harley should stop building touring bikes with crossover pipes and design there exhaust systems like the Victory Vision in where the rear cylinder exhaust is routed down then out, aft of the swing arm.
I would like to extend a great Thank You to Tommy Tune for suggesting to go to True Duals. Hawg Man for his Fullsac Performance (like) modification in which he went into great detail describing power, torque, heat reduction and sound. Hawg Man, I paid the extra hundred dollars for the Vance and Hines over the Fullsac Performance pipe because I liked the way the one piece heat shield looked over the stock HD shields. 1Big’n, I didn’t go with the Rhineharts because they where too expensive and you told me that they stick out more than stock beside the left passenger floorboard, and if you had an inattentive passenger (which my wife isn’t) she could burn her leg. Payloader for telling me although the Power Commander did not remove any heat, it sure made it easy to match the modifications I made to get to this point. Also he pretty much said that I wouldn’t feel much difference if I had spent four hundred dollars on a set of slip-ons.
Finally, to all Forum members, Thank You. I hope I can help you in the future as you have helped me.
I'll post back on this topic once I get the wife back on it. It'll have to get alot warmer before that happens.
If I don't get caught in traffic, I'm sure she'll be pleased.
See Ya out on the rode.

RE: So, how many miles did you ride this year?

Coldest temp I've ever ridden in was 23 degrees. It was just a couple of weeks ago actually. My car struck a piece of vinyl siding that was blowing across the rode and punctured the radiator. Needless to say I was without a car for a week. Forced to ride the bike to work I had to brake my own rule of not riding below 35 degrees.
I've put 5,000 miles on my bike in 9 months just commuting to work and put 5,000 miles on my car in twelve. Normally drive the wifes car on week ends.

RE: Whats the lowdown on IDS?

I was looking at the new '08 models at a store while out in Las Vegas last month. It looks to me that the iso drive parts (the ones I could see)are a bracket up by the steering head, mounts the front cylinder head to the frame to isolate vibration. I don't know more about it but, I think it just isolates vibration. I don't think this will cure your problem.

RE: Exhaust-ing...

Changing ones exhaust system is all about what you are trying to achieve. More power, different sound, different look, removing the crossover pipe to remove heat. Once you've decided, then that will narrow your options. Yes, I once considered the Fullsac header Mod but after giving it much thought I've decided to go with the Vince and Hines true dual headers with my stock mufflers. I like the seamless look that the Vance & Hines have and I don't mind the sound that the stock mufflers have. (I can't justify spending 400 to 500 dollars on mufflers just for a few hp's and ft lbs of torque) Plus, my issue is to remove as much heat from the passenger's floorboards as possible. I love the Rhineharts, but they are too expensive. I plan to do this over the next few months.

RE: Loud Pipes & City Ordnances

I got to get in on this. It's not that some folks want loud pipes so much as they want loud pipes to say " Hey, look at me. Ain't I cool upon my Harley". If people would just ride their respective motorcycles for the shear love of it as oppose to trying to make a statement, we would all be better off as a community.

RE: Cooler and better running with Cobra’s Fi2000R

I agree with everything 1Big'n has said above. I had considered a Cobra 2000 EFI this summer but went with a Power Commander USB III instead. (I didn't want to mess with lifting the gas tank to access the fuel injectors. I have an Ultra Classic) Upon installation I did notice slightly better performance but no reduction in heat. My fuel mileage stayed about the same. 35 to 32 mpg daily commute duty. You will notice a greater reduction in engine heat by going with an oil cooler and Amsoil synthetic oil. Screaming Eagle 110 ci motors come standard with an oil cooler, your 96ci motor is only 14ci smaller. Think about it.
Your options are: Remove the Cobra EFI, sell it on EBAY and by an oil cooler. Or adjust the two lower pots on your EFI just a hair every fill-up until you achieve your fuel mileage. Or buy another EFI system.
Personally, I'd go with the first option.

RE: Fullsac Performance Header Pipe Modification

Hey 1Big'n
That surplus store is 2 miles from the house.
Unfortunately I'm not home. I'm in Las Vegas on a working trip at Nellis AFB.
Had a chance to check out some bikes in the parking lot at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway while attending the IHRA Pro Drag race on Saturday. Saw the Rhineharts on a few bikes. Beautiful. Saw some 2 into 1 setups but all of them had turned blue in some spots. I made up my mind that I will go to some true dual setup. Still not sure which one.
Stopped in at the local HD dealer in downtown Vegas. Asked them the typical "How can I get rid of the heat off the rear crossover pipe?"
One salesman told me to wrap the entire pipe with some heat tape.
I said "you mean underneath the shields?" He said "No, on top of them"
Now that's got to be the craziest thing I ever heard.
Next, I spoke to the service manager. He asked me what I had done to the bike and I told him. He proceeded to tell me to remove my power commander and get a race tune and didn't push the true duals much.
He went on and on about who bad power commanders where and that if I had asked, he would not sell me one. Basically he said the the power commander will fail and short out my ECM in time and that Harley will not cover it under its warranty. At this time I had had enough and walked out of the store not buying a single thing. These people don't know a damm thing and still refuse to admit that the '07 have a definite heat problem.
